Proverbs 1
Have you ever met someone who would rather make something up than admit they didn’t know about a topic? Have you ever thought, “This person has no idea what they’re talking about”? Or have you ever met someone who was really smart, who had all the facts, but wasn’t very “street-smart”? They did know all the answers, but didn’t have the wisdom to apply the knowledge to life.
Knowledge and wisdom are two different things, but go hand in hand. It’s just like knowing how to do something is different than being able to do something. Just because you’ve read every book there is on how to remodel your kitchen, doesn’t mean you have the ability. Just because you know the Scripture, doesn’t mean you have the wisdom to apply it to your life
I love the book of Proverbs. This book gives us true knowledge and the wisdom to apply it to our lives. And unlike fortune cookie proverbs, this is the Word of God. The first seven verses give us the purpose of the entire book:
Proverbs 1:1-7 The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: 2 To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, 3 to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; 4 to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth-- 5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, 6 to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Reading Proverbs every day will give us guidance and wisdom into our daily living. There are 31 Proverbs. Many people like to read the Proverb chapter that coincides with the day of the month (so today you would read Proverbs 9). This book is often overlooked, but is packed with insight and direction for our lives.
My challenge to you – for the next month, read one Proverb a day…the wisdom and instruction will change your life!
I’m praying for you!
Pastor Amy
